Why Swifties Hold the Key to Well-Being
Have you ever felt that rush of excitement when you find someone who loves Taylor Swift as much as you do? That instant connection, that "Oh my gosh, you're a Swiftie too?" moment? Well, it turns out that connection isn't just fun—it's actually good for your well-being!
The Power of Fandoms
Let's talk about fandoms for a minute. At their core, fandoms are communities of people who share a passionate interest in something, whether it's a sports team, TV show, book series, or music artist. These communities provide so much more than just entertainment—they offer a sense of belonging, shared identity, and opportunities for creative expression.
Fandoms foster camaraderie that makes fans feel like they're part of something bigger than themselves. In positive psychology terms, this creates meaning—one of the essential elements of well-being and flourishing. When we connect with others over shared passions, we're actually fulfilling a fundamental human need.
There are countless fandoms out there—sports fans who paint their faces on game day, Trekkies who speak Klingon, book lovers who debate plot twists for hours. And then there are the music fandoms: the Beyhive, BTS ARMY, and of course, the Swifties. As a proud Swiftie myself and as someone with a masters in applied positive psychology, I LOVE talking about how good it is for your mental health to be a Taylor Swift fan.
The Swiftie Community: More Than Just Fans
While all these fandoms contribute to meaning, I’m going to spend the rest of this blog talking about what makes the Swiftie community so meaningful. Through dedicated online spaces, social media engagement, and strong collective support for both Taylor and each other, Swifties have created a global network of connection, and by doing so, a global network of belonging.
We participate in listening parties, countdown to album releases together, decode Easter eggs in music videos, attend concerts in matching outfits, and engage on social media to share our love for Taylor's music. The friendship bracelets, the inside jokes, the shorthand references to specific songs—these all create a language and culture that's instantly recognizable to those in the know.
Swifties also actively participate in charitable actions, supporting causes Taylor champions and organizing fundraisers in her name. When you find another Swiftie—whether online or in person—there's an immediate sense of recognition and belonging. You've found your people.
Why Belonging Is Essential for Well-Being
This sense of belonging isn't just nice to have—it's essential for our mental health and well-being. Humans are inherently social creatures, and feeling connected to others fulfills one of our most basic psychological needs.
Research consistently shows that social connection is one of the strongest predictors of happiness and life satisfaction. When we feel like we belong, we experience lower rates of anxiety and depression, stronger immune systems, and even longer lives. Our Swiftie connections might seem like simple fun on the surface, but they're actually providing profound benefits to our overall health.
Taylor Swift: A Well-Being Role Model
Beyond the community itself, Taylor Swift serves as an incredible example of well-being principles in action. Her career demonstrates grit, character strengths, inspiration, and emotional intelligence—all components of flourishing according to positive psychology. As fans we get to notice these qualities and characteristics in Taylor but we also learn them ourselves.
Positive Emotions: More Than Just Happiness
One obvious way Swifties engage with well-being is through positive emotions. And we're not just talking about happiness here—we're talking about gratitude, pride, awe, and other uplifting feelings that Taylor's music evokes.
Psychologist Barbara Fredrickson's Broaden-and-Build Theory explains how these positive emotions help people thrive by broadening their thinking and building personal resources over time. When we listen to songs that spark joy, nostalgia, or inspiration, we're actually expanding our capacity to think creatively and build resilience for challenging times.
So when you've had "Shake It Off" on repeat during a tough week, or felt that surge of empowerment listening to "The Man," you're not just enjoying music—you're actively contributing to your psychological resources. Thank you, Taylor!
Grit: Perseverance in Action
Angela Duckworth's research on grit—the combination of passion and perseverance—is perfectly exemplified in Taylor's career. Remember that infamous moment at the 2009 VMAs when Taylor thought an entire crowd was booing her? In her "Miss Americana" documentary, she reflected: "For someone who's built their whole belief system on getting people to clap for you... the whole crowd booing was... formative."
But the way she chose to let it be formative wasn't by giving up—it was by showing up again and again for her craft and her fans. On a world stage, she demonstrated emotional regulation and later processed this experience in a way that didn't shut her down but propelled her forward.
She reframed this difficult event as a growth opportunity, and thank goodness she did! This teaches us what grit looks like in practice and hopefully empowers us all to persevere when facing our own challenges.
Shared Language: "There's a Taylor Swift Lyric for That!"
Another beautiful aspect of the Swiftie experience is our shared language. Drop a Taylor lyric reference in conversation, and another fan will immediately know exactly what you're talking about—and probably continue the verse! It's like an inside joke that over 200 million fans are in on, creating instant connection and belonging.
This shared vocabulary helps us process our own experiences, too. Having a breakup? There's a Taylor song for that. Feeling on top of the world? Taylor's got you covered. Struggling to express a complex emotion? Taylor has probably already found the perfect words.
Finding Connection After the Eras Tour
With the Eras Tour ending and Taylor taking some well earned time off, you might be feeling a bit of that post-concert blues. The intense connection of singing along with thousands of other fans in a stadium was a peak experience of belonging. So how do we maintain that feeling of connection?
